Decision Support Systems
Managers and system operators make decisions everyday that impact the
profitability of commercial facilities. Unfortunately, uninformed decisions lead
to costly mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice to know that these decisions were only
made after careful analysis of a facility's unique processes and runtime
statistics? A "Decision Support System" or DSS may be the answer you're looking
for.
Simply stated, a DSS is really a data collection and reporting system that
stores and provides access to the operational statistics related to a facility's
daily operations. Enterprise-level systems can also be developed to store and provide access to the
operational statistics of multiple facilities simultaneously. Statistics of this nature
can provide valuable insight into a facility’s true efficiency and process improvement
potential.
Why is a controls firm offering systems of this nature? The answer is
simple. Several of our engineers have years of experience in data-warehousing
development and most of the statistics that we're describing here are produced
by control systems. All control systems, especially environmental control
systems, have the potential of producing valuable statistics. The power metrics,
temperature set-points, temperature actual values, pressure set-points, pressure
actual values, equipment runtime statistics, and even error events can easily be
collected from control systems that are provided in these facilities. When this
information is combined with information from other systems in the facility, the
resulting reports become powerful analysis tools. One simply needs to define a
storage mechanism and develop the tools required to format the statistics for
proper analysis.
To achieve maximum efficiency, a facility's set-points, schedules, and
results have to be constantly analyzed and adjusted. A properly configured DSS
can dramatically simplify this process.
